Lessons

Are you embarrassed you can’t use your camera properly? Do you feel overwhelmed by all the different settings and techniques? Are you worried you’ll take rubbish pictures on your next trip?

I know exactly how you feel! There was a time when I wasn’t happy with any of my shots. I didn’t know what f/5.6 meant, I didn’t know how to use back-button focus, and I didn’t even know what the Exposure Triangle was!

Don’t panic. If you book a lesson or a workshop with me, I’ll explain everything to you in a simple, down-to-earth way and give you practical tips that’ll allow you to take spectacular photos with whatever camera you happen to have. You’ll soon feel much more confident, skilful and knowledgeable—and you should have a lot of fun along the way!

Who am I?

I’ve been a wildlife photographer since 2013, travelling to 26 countries on all seven continents. I’ve won several awards including Wildlife Photographer of the Year (UK), Best International Wildlife Photographer, the Wildlife prize in the Professional Photographer of the Year and the Sunday Times/Audley Travel Big Shot.

I’ve written two books and dozens of articles for Expert Photography, Outdoor Photography, Wildlife Photographic and various other publications.

I’ve also worked as the Resident Photographer at various safari lodges in Africa, such as &Beyond Klein’s Camp, Ol Jogi and Muchenje, where I’ve taught photography to the guests and taken pictures and video clips of the local wildlife, plus the rooms, food and staff.

How do I book?

I teach photography to both individuals and groups. If you’d like to book a lesson either in person or online, just click the chat button or get in touch on +44 7942 800921 or at nick@nickdalephotography.com. I charge £90 for an hour, £150 for half a day or £250 for a full day plus any travel expenses.

If you’d like to come to one of my half-day photography workshops around London, please check the Events page.

Why have lessons?

Everyone has a camera these days - if only the one on your mobile phone. Whether we're at home or off on a big trip, we like to take pictures of ourselves, of landscapes, of buildings and of animals. If you'd like to take better shots - wherever you're going and whatever your equipment - please get in touch, and I'll try and help you get the most out of your photography. I focus mostly on wildlife, but I'm happy to provide coaching on shooting portraits, landscapes or any other subject matter.

What's involved?

Not everyone needs the same kind of coaching, so I'm happy to tailor the lessons by discussing what you want from your photography and what you feel is missing, whether it's technical knowledge, familiarity with your equipment or rules of composition. We'll spend time in the field actually taking pictures, but we'll also have a chance to review your work and talk through what you're trying to achieve and how best to do it. If you prefer, you can simply send me a selection of 10-20 of your best images, and then we can arrange a Skype or WhatsApp call to discuss them.

Where will we go?

Wildlife is never far away. I live in Putney in south-west London. I took the pictures on this page just down the road at the London Wetland Centre, and I’ve also taught in Richmond Park and Bushy Park. I don't just focus on wildlife photography, though, so it should be easy to find a suitable venue within reasonable travelling distance.

How much will it cost?

I charge £90 for an hour of coaching (plus any travel expenses). That would be long enough for a portfolio review, say.

I also offer a 50% discount for a half-day session (four hours for £180) or a full day (eight hours for £360). The price is the same whether it's for an individual or a small group, so feel free to bring along your friends and family!

Testimonials

The session was fantastic. Nick was very knowledgeable. He divided his time between us nicely. He challenged everyone to do things they hadn’t tried before. He did a really nice mop-up session, and all won prizes (SD cards). He explained a lot about why one image was better than another. We overran because we were having fun, but he checked no one needed to leave.

I think everyone learned something, and I believe everyone went home with some images she loved. I’d book to go back in July if that wasn’t weird!
