Capture the Moment!
Since 2013, I’ve published hundreds of blog posts on all aspects of photography. Some are aimed at helping photographers with their technique, settings, and equipment, but others describe my exhibitions, workshops, and adventures in Africa, Antarctica, and beyond.
Feel free to browse chronologically or click on the category heading above any post for specific content, such as Equipment, Trips or Hints and Tips.

My New Mirrorless Equipment
Last week, I told you about my conversion from a Nikon DSLR user to a Sony mirrorless customer. Here’s a quick summary of my new kit.

2021: The Great Escapes
Given the Covid pandemic, the year 2021 might’ve been a disaster. As it was, I managed to escape London to go on three photographic trips: to Kicheche Bush Camp, Arviat and Antarctica. They were all very enjoyable for different reasons, and it was also nice to get away from Africa for a change!

Anthony Morganti Photo Critique
Just a quick post today. Anthony Morganti has very kindly done a critique of my top 10 photos on YouTube if you’d like to take a look…

Top Five Favourite Moments
My first great moment came when I was staying at Kicheche Bush Camp. I was on an Exodus trip led by Paul Goldstein, and we went on a game drive into the Masai Mara National Reserve, looking for leopards in the trees by the river.

Paul Goldstein has been a wildlife photographer and expedition guide for over 20 years, leading trips for Exodus to Svalbard, Tadoba, Kicheche and many other locations around the world.

2020: A Journal of the Plague Year
The year 2019 was a stand-out year for me when it comes to my photography career: being able to spend four months on safari in Tanzania and Kenya was a spectacular result - and all because I happened to read an online article about a photographer who’d managed to spend a whole year staying at lodges in Africa in exchange for taking pictures. Who knew it was even possible?!

Lens Culture Submission Review
I’ve just received a free Submission Review by a LensCulture photographic expert. The images are shown above, and this is the review.

Lions of the Serengeti and Masai Mara
I’ve spent the last four months teaching photography at Klein’s Camp, Serengeti Under Canvas, Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp and Cottar’s 1920s Safari Camp. Here are a few facts about lions I picked up from the guides along the way…

Wildlife Sightings
The only question that really matters when you’re on safari is “Will we see X?” Now, ‘X’ may be a lion, a cheetah, a kill or a wildebeest crossing, but the frustrating bit is that you never get a straight answer.

In the Wild Exhibition and Caption Competition
I had my first exhibition at Lumi Arts from 20-30 November 2018, with a private view on the opening Thursday night. It was great to have a chat with so many friends and other guests, and we had quite a few visitors during the week. I haven’t seen any sales yet, but you never know…!

The Ones that Got Away
I get nervous before I go on photography trips. Part of that is just worrying about travel arrangements, visas and packing everything I need, but another part of it is worrying that I won't get the shots I want. Here are a few examples of 'the ones that got away'.
